Flower Guide for Amaryllis 

Hippeastrum are a very popular showy flower especially during the festive season. Amaryllis is available as a bulb, plant and cut flower in the flower markets. The highly impressive large trumpet shaped blossoms cluster at the top of long thick leafless hollow stems.

A single stem of Amaryllis, alone in a vase is a common design for this very large flower. The blossoms can also be used in conjunction with other flowers in gift bouquets and bridal work. Amaryllis are also beautiful in vegetative and botanical designs.

Botanical Name: Hippeastrum (hip-ee-AS-trum)

Botanical Facts: Hippeastrum comes from the Greek word hippos (horse) referring to the blossom of the species H. piniceum. The dutch were the first Europeans to develop commerical Amaryllis bulbs. 

Description: Four to Six large trumpet shaped blossoms clustered at the top of a long thick leafless hollow stem.

Caring for Hippeastrum

For purchasing, it is recommended to purchase with several tight buds showing colour and only just beginning to open.

For conditioning, cut under water with as sharp knife. Hydrate in warm water for two hours before storage or usage. Use commercial floral preservative / food.
