Carnation, otherwise known as Dianthus behlond to the family Caryophyllaceae. There are over 300 varieties of Carnation around the world, in a wide variety of colours.

Each colour of carnation has a specific meaning. White symbolises purity, pink is mother's love, red is true love, whilse purple symbolises capriciousness.

Carnation are the January birth flower. The flower in white are often used in wedding bouquets and for first wedding anniversaries. Pink is commonly used for Mothers Day.

Botanical Facts: The name is from the Greek words (di) Zeus and (anthos) Flower.

Types of Carnation

There are two types of Carnation available on the flower market. Varieties can vary in colour, head size and type.

There are the two main types that are regularly used in flower arranging & floristry including standard and spray carnation.

Colours: White, Yellow, Pink, Salmon, Cerise, Purple, Red, Green, Bi-coloured and vintage hues. 

Caring for Carnation

Carnations have a long lifespan in a vase. They are a good staple for a florist to have for gift work, wedding and funeral work.

In general, remove all foliage below the water line with a sharp knife or scissors. Hydrate in  luke warm water and flower food for a couple of hours or overnight before storage or usage. Refer to the video on how to condition carnations.
